The enhancement of a neglected site in the centre of Caerau, a village which has suffered from social deprivation and isolation. Local people have been at the heart of proposals to improve the urban design quality, create a safer place, and provide a better trading environment for local businesses. The scheme was Highly Commended in the UK-wide Regeneration & Renewal Awards 2012.
Fiona Cloke Associates led the community engagement, with Mel Witherden, and carried out the detailed design and contract administration. Initial layout proposals were modified in response to feedback from local people and the space was transformed from one which many had been nervous of using to an area which again functioned as a focal point for the village.
