This study involved the identification of gateway sites on the approaches to Carmarthen and the preparation of alternative proposals for these sites, including selection of sites for public art installation. Fiona Cloke Associates worked with local communities, highway and planning authorities, the art school and potential funding bodies.
Implementation of the proposals for selected gateways included working with public artist, Andrew Rowe, to design appropriate settings for his artwork. The Carmarthen Oak is a 5m high corten steel structure based upon local traditions of giving an oak leaf as a friendship token and of hanging quilts out to air over hedgerows.
