Fiona Cloke Associates carried out the design and supervision of construction of a series of elements within this Community Park which spans three derelict colliery sites. The park themes include sustainability, access for all and Welsh culture. Extensive consultation with the local community led the development which includes facilities for climbing, canoeing, fishing, pony trek trails, part of the National Cycle Network, playing fields and play areas.
The north shaft in Deep Navigation colliery was over 745m deep and this was interpreted in Navigation Walk with ‘coal shaft’ arches, and ‘coal seams’ embedded in the path. Large areas of native tree and shrub planting into colliery spoil created a framework for the wide range of recreation facilities which were accommodated within the park.
